Solve : HDD toggle switch? |
|
Answer» Hello- I want to put one of my hard drives on a TOGGLE switch so its not running all the time...USED very rarely. I have a BASIC 2 post toggle switch. what is the proper method of wiring this to not CAUSE damage to the drive? should I splice the toggle into the black wire, or is it not a good idea to interrupt the ground when the positive will constantly be attached. and if its the power wire I should tap into, what power rating for a toggle? the switch I have here is a 10A 250VAC thanks~ not the best idea to just simply turn off a HD after the computer has booted up...and besides this probably will void your warranty on it.I wont be turning it on or off while the system is on. I should also note that this is not my main hard drive....no operating system on it. Just used for storage. still you could get some back-lashes from the switches or rapid bursts which could feedback into the PSU causing some damage and also feedback into the Drive. its like this, when you suddenly turn off a motor, all the electricity that is in the motor that hasn't been used is reversed back through the circuit. i've DONE this before to a hobby circuit of mine, it fried a few chips. in the end, its not recommended.like I said, I wont be touching the switch while the system is on.its not that, even when the computer is off, there is still a small amount held in the switch, that is backlashed through the rest of the circuit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switch#Inductive_loads you could add a capacitator to it, to supress the spike, but still i wouldn't recommend it. Here is a link to an article entitled "Build a SATA hard drive switch to boot multiple operating systems!". http://www.thesataswitch.com/ Maybe it would be useful. . perfect! great info, thank you. |
