Answer» Hackers gained "full functional control" of key Nasa COMPUTERS in 2011, the agency's inspector general has told US lawmakers.
Paul K Martin said hackers took over Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) computers and "compromised the ACCOUNTS of the most privileged JPL users".
He said the attack, involving Chinese IP addresses, was under investigation.
In a statement, Nasa said it had "made significant progress to PROTECT the agency's IT systems".

Seems like many of the recent stories of sites going down are due to DDOS attacks, which in my mind are nothing compared to an attack like this. Pretty impressive/scary someone getting into control NASA computers. Yeah, my site was DDos'd last YEAR and it wasn't in any newspapers or anything.
But like you say the 'real' hacks are the ones that actually mean something. I think a lot is 'sensationalism' by the media to target the people who don't know about computers. A DDOS attack to somebody who has no knowledge still sounds a bit scary.
