I would try to leave the computer ALONE for a day and see if that process disappears.

Otherwise, you can forcefully end it in Task Manager.I initiated an AVG update VIA the system tray icon while watching avgrsx.exe in the processes window. It gave a very brief blip of CPU activity then went right back to zero.Actually, can you post a HijackThis log here

They had the problem identified in an hour -- a defective motherboard with at least three blown capacitors. So, now I've got a new MB, a fresh XP SP3, and am "on the road again", as Willie Nelson would say. Thanks to those who offered suggestions.
