Solve : Fun with the Sound Blaster AWE32, CD audio and DOS?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a computer built out of old parts that I use for retro computer gaming. The sound card is a non-PLUG and play ISA Sound Blaster AWE32. However, I am having a few problems with it, and having GROWN up mostly with PCI and PnP I'm unsure as to how to solve them:

  • CD audio won't play. There is currently a CD audio cable running from one of the drives to the small CD-Audio socket on the card (it doesn't have an IDE audio socket, though). I'll have to check the other end to see if it's properly connected, but I tried switching to another existing cable (running to a different drive) with no luck.
  • Any DOS program that attempts to access the AWE32 in pure DOS mode freezes. As far as I know, the card is set up for the defaults (port 220, IRQ 5, DMA 1), the BIOS is set to Plug and Play OS (disable this?) and the IRQ and DMA are both reserved for Legacy ISA. Attempting to autodetect the card in Tomb Raider setup returns different, weird IRQ/DMA settings that also freeze. Everything works under Windows 98.
  • On Windows, the gameport doesn't seem to be working properly, though that could just be a problem with trying to use my SIDEWINDER gamepad with DOS games. (Depending on the game, some to most of the buttons won't work, and occasionally the D-pad won't work either.) Any advice on this matter, or advice as to more old game-compatible gamepads, would also be greatly appreciated.

Is there anybody out there that could help with my crusty hardware woes? Or should I just TRY to get an AWE64 or PnP AWE32?

Thanks in advance,

-- Matt

EDIT: It's running on an AOpen MX6B-EZ motherboard with Intel 440ZX chipset.
