Answer» My UNDERGRAD (alas, many years ago) was in English and I have a great respect for the language, along with an enjoyment in its proper usage. You can just imagine how many times a day I cringe when reading posts on these forums.Quote from: WillyW on July 20, 2010, 11:33:49 AM I understand. No need to get insulting. You wrote, "it is becoming acceptable and commonplace." . I was just pointing out that the USA is not everywhere in the world. Also the bit about hayseeds was accurate. Over here we imagine that the kind of people who say "where it's at" are sort of like the characters in the TV series "The Dukes Of Hazzard" or earlier, "The Beverly Hillbillies". I don't think anyone meant to offend anyone else, and certainly not any other nationality. Let's just move on, shall we please?Quote from: Salmon Trout on July 20, 2010, 11:46:14 AM No need to get insulting. .... (English accent On) It was not meant to be a bit more insulting, than the post to which it replied. (English accent Off) Quote from: Allan on July 20, 2010, 11:50:40 AM I don't think anyone meant to offend anyone else, and certainly not any other nationality. Let's just move on, shall we please? seems like willyw thinks so. I wonder if he knows what a "willy" is in English slang? Quote from: Salmon Trout on July 20, 2010, 12:02:15 PM seems like willyw thinks so. Umm.. No.. *you* brought that up. Quote I wonder if he knows what a "willy" is in English slang? Is there a REASON that I would care? All languages need to be dynamic. If the English language never changed we would all be speaking Old English from the 5Th century, or Middle English from 1,000 years ago. Anybody that has read EVEN a little bit of those languages know they are difficult to read today. I don't think any of US see that as practical. Modern English needs to constantly change as more technical terms and foreign words as used in everyday conversation.Thread locked. |
