Solve : Dynamic IP'S?

Answer»

Hi there guys, this isnt a problem ive got its just a query. Ive Googled this but i think ive got it all messed up. So anyway, as i was reading the posts by Proph which where then finnished when the Admin said he had 'Blocked the IP'. WELL i thought dynamic I.P's changed everytime the user connected to their ISP, so would blocking the I.P work? Anyone wish to explain to me how it works?
Oh and im sorry that this is the only example i could think of, its the ONE i could think of at the time, there are many OTHERS.
Thanks

ChrisYeah, I was wondering about this too.
Some IPs are dynamic, others static.
The admin also said he'd blocked the username, so Proph/godtheonly/GX2_Man can't log on.
Anyone know about the whole dynamic IP blocking thing?no blocking a dynamic ip is about as useful as trying to set fire to water.

its a temporary thing it will only work until his isp changes his ip, which can take months or minutesI see.
Thanks for clearing that up.
At least his blocked username will slow him down, right?I doubt Admin blocked just his single IP address, more likely he blocked a whole range from his ISP.But in theory, couldn't that block other people from the same ISP?Yep, it's a tough world. OK, I was just wondering.
Anyway, at least he's gone for now.
I hope.Ahh thanks. Also can i just say that this wasnt about Proph. It the only example i could think of.
So do people who could be legititmate be banned as well because of the fact that they are dynamic?!
Thanks guys

Banning Members
Unfortunately, users are not always filled with the great sense of community that YaBB provides. These users can become rude, break rules, harass other members, or even spam your board. This is why YaBB gives you the ability to block these troublemakers from disturbing your board. To begin banning a member, ACCESS your Admin Center and find "Member Controls" as described above. Find the link titled "Ban Members" and click on it. This new page will give you three methods for banning a member: by IP address, email and username.
IP Address
Banning by IP address will prevent anyone from accessing your board if their IP address is listed here. While effective, this could prevent a legitimate user from logging on. It may also fail if the user is behind a proxy or has a dynamic IP. To enter a specific IP address, enter all four octets of the users IP address (example: 192.168.255.. You may also use wildcards to block a range of IP addresses by only entering in the first few octets of the address (example: 192.168. ). Enter only 1 IP address per line.

Email Address
The second method allows you to prevent anyone using a specific email address (example: [email protected]) from registering or logging in. Enter only 1 email address per line.

Username
Finally, the simplest way to ban a user is by their username. Enter only 1 username per line.

Ahhh thanks for that Fed.

ChrisThanks Fed.two of the most common types of banning, MAC and IP, can be easily averted. however, its up to the "ban-ee" to consider if its really worth his/her time. its also up to his/her computer skill.I have never heard of a forum that provided MAC address banning...  Not even sure that the originating MAC address would survive the trip to the server-side software.  MUST test that sometime...
