Solve : Desktop display problem?

Answer»

My Mother has asked me to sort a problem out on her computer, the problem is that on her windows desktop purple dots and lines appear all over the place sometimes obscuring text and pictures etc. When A GUI is opened it leaves tracks surrounding them which only go away when other GUI's are opened on top (replacing them with there on dashed line tracks). I have updated drivers for Hardware and software and tried changing resolution refresh rates etc to no avail. The tech info for her computer are as follows :

Toshiba Satelite P30
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 (driver ver 5.1.2001.0)
Mobile Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz
3.20 GHz, 512 MB of RAM
Windows XP 5.1 (build: 2600) Service Pack 2
System Type        X86-based PC
Processor        x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel ~3200 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date        TOSHIBA V1.30, 04/10/2004
SMBIOS Version        2.31
Hardware Abstraction Layer        Version = "5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)"
Total Physical Memory        512.00 MB
Available Physical Memory        197.27 MB
Total Virtual Memory        2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory        1.96 GB
Page File Space        1.22 GB
Adapter RAM        64.00 MB (67,108,864 bytes)

If anyone knows a solution to this problem It would be appreciated, or if more info is needed....

thanks

Did your scan for Viruses, Trojan Horses and Spyware?

Does the same happen when you enter the BIOS?Thanks for your reply Raptor, I knew I forgot something... I scanned a while ago for viruses and found a Bagel (??) virus at some point but got rid of it, there was also a win32 virus which I also got rid of,after that I changed the antivirus program  (was previously using antivir - now EZ)  updated and OK. Would one of these viruses have cause this and if so can I reverse the effects without having to re-write her hard drive?
Thanks, Mac Quote

When Windows still boots, most can be undone and repaired.

Try using the following scanners to ensure that all the threats are gone:

Virus scanners
AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner
Trend Micro Housecall
-- Online anti virus scanner.

Anti spy/malware
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner

Firewalls
Use both a hardware and software firewall.
Be advised as dual software firewalls may cause problems

ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more USER friendly
Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

Removal tools
The following files are not substitutes for the ones described above.
They are either diagnostic tools or removal tools for malware of a certain kind

HijackThis
-- Manual malware remover. Post the HijackThis log generated only if requested!
McAfee Stinger
-- Virus removal tool. No substitute for a fully functional virus scanner!
CWshredder
-- CoolWebSearch removal tool. Widely known and persistant Hijacker.

If you are absolutely sure that the computer is entirely clean see if the problem still occurs. If it does, come back and we'll dig deeper.I was finding the same list.

But Raptor has already supplied here.  All relevant test's we're done her computer is clean, no viruses, spyware, malware etc but the problem is stilll there, I have tried to add a picture of the desktop so you can see for yourself what it looks like. It usualy looks worse than this

Thanks for your continuing help, it's appreciated.
MacWhat are your system temperatures? Quote
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 (driver ver 5.1.2001.0)

Are they the latest video drivers from the manufacturer's website? (Not Windows update)Do the purple lines always appear at the same place or are wandering. Thanks again to all,
The temp of the laptop is 29 degrees, the dots seem random but are focussed around icons, over text etc the lines appear whenever a GUI is oppened, if the GUI is MOVED more appear around the new position and some of the other lines from the first position dissapear. Multiple virus scans/malware/spyware scans completed and computer is clean (scanned using 6 different pieces of software - all fully updated). No sound problems which could also be caused by overheating and the problem was there before Real Player was installed on the machine.  I only installed drivers from the makers websites i.e Toshiba/ATI. I think thats all the questions asked, I will make sure the fan is not COVERED (but I'm pretty sure it's not)
thanks
MacAnd you have completely uninstalled the current videocard drivers?

Use Driver Cleaner to be certain. Follow the instructions to the letter.Swap monitors.  It's a new Laptop surely there is a resolution to this problem that doesn't involve getting a new MONITOR? I will try the drive cleaner thing then maybe I'll just re-write the hard disk if that doesn't work?
MacDoes it have a Video outlet for a monitor on the back? Hook it up to a free-standing monitor and see if it is working OK.

Do you know if the laptop has been dropped at all?

Otherwise I would look immediately to the warranty.Just try this. Right-Click the desktop and open the Properties. Click Settings, and see if the colour is set to 32-bit (Highest).
