Solve : Dell & Linux?

Answer»

Coming this Thursday, Dell will begin selling a few of their computers with Ubuntu Linux preinstalled. Anyone going to consider buying a Dell with linux? I kinda wish they would go with OpenSuSE instead of Ubuntu, but I guess it's easy enough to reinstall.

I think it's a great idea. I would imagine this would ALSO lower the overall cost of the machine as well. I do however have some what of a difficult time believing Dell when it comes to Linux. They did this in the past and then completely dropped Linux and said they were not going to do anything other then Microsoft in the past. But with the popularity of *nix and especially Ubuntu maybe they'll stick with it this time.

Also wonder how they're support for *nix is going to be. Especially when it comes to drive support.Well, according to the slashdot article and it's reference, their only going to offer hardware that is mature and proven to work with Linux. Could be that their support offering would be along the lines of, "I dunno, ask linuxquestions.org."
When did dell offer Linux before? Linux has come a long way as far as user friendliness in the last couple years.
Here is one old EXAMPLE I found after a quick search, sure there are plenty of others as I recall reading about it a lot in the past.

LinkThat's good, that they're selling more of them.
Previously they were a specialist range, not available outside the US, and didn't save that much cash.Found this link that's related to this article. This is a price comparison between Dell's with Unbuntu and Windows.

It may even be enough to sway a few Joe Average buyers towards Linux.

It may also offset the cost of a new Windows XP Disk for those who
do not want to be forced by the market to use Vista.

P.W. hasn't quite got it in his mind to go to Vista yet.

P.W. ain't a gamer so................

That's an idea too, I didn't think of that.
They could BUY the Linux version and an XP disk for the same or less, than the version with Vista.I think linux still has some things that need to change before everyone will start flocking to it though. I've been using linux for 1-2 years and still get confused when installing things.
Maybe, if newbies start using linux, they will flood linuxquestions.org with INSTALL questions. If that happens, the developers would probably think harder about making GUI installers. Nobody likes re-answering install problems, and newbies don't like searching for and reading tutorials, so something will have to change so everybody doesn't go mad.
The dell-linux deal might be the catalyst to make it happen. That's a nice idea. The saga of buying an Ubuntu Dell with Complete Care (tm)
