Answer» Hello, I have a dell latitude C640, and it just started happening today, when I turn it on, it makes the loading noises, as usual, but it almost sounds like the head on the HD is scratching the platter... It is a louder ticking NOISE, i am not sure how to describe it, ive never HEARD it before, and am not sure if it is damaging the HD... any SUGGESTIONS? What you have described sounds very like the infamous head-crash where the read/write head(s) contact the platter causing physical DAMAGE. However, if the system is BOOTING and performing correctly it's doubtful if the problem is with the hdd. Perhaps the fan altho' it shouldn't be starting until the system temperatures reach the set fan-start. Whatever, make sure your backup is up-to-date.
