Solve : dark laptop screen?

Answer»

my toshiba LAPTOP screen is so dark the only way to see the icons is to hold a flashlight up to it. i pulgged in a desktop monitor to it and it worked FINE...has ANYONE seen or heard of this problem? What happened before this started, and how old is the laptop?
Try the brightness controls (many laptops have hotkeys for this, read your manual).the laptop is 5 years old, there are no controls on the monitor itself to adjust, nothing that i know of happened to it before it went dark. hane a niece that may have "played" with it, but nothing out of the ordinary that i know of. thanks for the replyLook for a key often labelled "Fn", sometimes picked in blue.
Hold that and look for brightness controls, often on the keyboard, picked in blue above sharing the same key as, say, F5.
They normally look like a little sun with an arrow.
Hold Fn and press the one with an arrow pointing upwards several times, see if that makes a difference.Quote from: rskins120 on May 27, 2007, 05:45:26 AM

Check the keyboard. This can often be controlled by holding down the Fn key and pressing the brightness keys, which are usually found up by the volume control. I'll look for a picture to give you a better idea of what I mean.

Nice link, that details the things to check if the above does not work.thank you for the informative link, my problem sounds very familiar to the post on there. i am clueless though on how/where to open the laptop up or even where to begin to look for the problem.Quote
Try shutting and opening the lid a few times. I have this same problem with my laptop sometimes, usually it works after shutting/opening it once but sometimes it takes 10 or more times.

! I found when I took it apart that the switch that tells the laptop that the screen is "down" was held down by some plastic insulation that I accidentally moved. This made the laptop think the screen was always down. I moved it over and everything works fine now!!
Thanks for all the input, it put me on the right track!!

Well on the laptop my family has NEAR the top of the keyboard, where the screen and keyboard meet is this little piece of plastic you can push down. When you push it down the screen goes blank see if your laptop has something like that.nothing like that on my laptop. i tried the opening and closing of the monitor and that didn't work either....i guess i'll get out the scredriver set and start searching inside Another conclusion would be that the back light died in your laptop, you might want to get a local computer store to look at it instead of taking it apart.
