Solve : computer refuses to come out of standby?

Answer»

My daughters  computer would not come out of standby so she tried to turn it of with the power button and it wouldn't do that either so she cut it's power. When she tries to reboot now all that happens is the fan comes on and the cd rom drive   lights flash for a sec then thats it. The thinking light does not flash at all. ..and the screen stays dark..
Someone said maybe its a bios problem but i really dont know. I hope someone can help I think the computer overheated. What OS are you using. In old Windows 98 If you leave the computer Idle to long it will halt your computer. Need an OS to go any further. This is a complete log written by my daughter:

NOTE:  I contacted HP (which compaq now belongs to) chat tech support

from the college last night (10/18)  The advice I got was to power the

computer on and then hold the power button on the tower down for 5

MINUTES.  I thought this advice was bogus but I tried it anyway.  as

STATED the computer tower did power on, but holding the button for 5

minutes turned the computer off within 5 seconds and did nothing else.

NOTE 2:  I started keeping my tower horizontal about 2 months ago (vs. vertical)
What response do you get ......if......you hold down the f8 key on boot.........do you get the onscreen options? if this is so chose safe mode option........does it work......if a pc  is standby mode.........try moving the mouse......?

it maybe the hard drive.........look for the make/model of the drive.......and download diagnostics disk.... Quote

If you lay it over the wrong way all it's gizmos could fall out.
Make sure evrything in side is plugged in.
Cards & ram etc)Have you tried Ctrl+Alt+Delete? This will give you a screen with a bunch of choices. Try looking at your task manager to see what is running. When you Ctrl+Alt+Delete 3 times it will reboot your computer.
I once had a problem, I talked to a GUY at Best Buy. He told me that with the task manager has an option and it will ask "What do you want the Computer to do?" Click on that and take it out of the "Standby"mode.
(My computer was stuck running in Safemode).
He talked me right through the problem.
When all else fails, Best Buy has a team of Computer Doctors. They are not cheap, but they have diagnostic computers to tell you what is the problem. I hope this helps. Good luck!!!
