Solve : Boot Disk Failure?

Answer»

Please could you help i have been given a tiny computer to fix it is running on MILLENIUM os.  as of yet i can not get into anything i,ve tried to get into safemode but it just goes back to the same screen saying boot disk failure insert system disk, which i do not have,  is there any way i can get into safemode other than pressing f8 or ctrl.I  think that you need to find an ME boot disk file on the internet.  Try booting using the disk.  I know of no other way of GETTING into safe mode. If safe mode does not work, the installation of Windows is most likely damaged.

Try selecting the last known good configuration instead. Please could you advise how to get to the last known configuration, as i can not get past the screen with boot disk failure on it. Please help.   Quote

The good last known configuration option will not be available when you encounter a boot disk failure first.

Be certain that HDD 0 is set as the first boot device in the BIOS.

This is what you usually SEE when the hard drive has failed and is what happened to my hard drive when I was using Millennium Edition.

How old is the computer?

Can you boot to a bootdiskette A:\> prompt and use fdisk or dir /p to see any files on the drive?

You can download an ME OEM bootdisk image from...

BOOTDISKS

You'll have to download it to another computer's hard-drive (not directly to a floppy) and then double-click on the file with a clean formatted floppy in the A: drive.

And this will help you retrieve the ProductKey IF you can read the drive.

You can then put it into your computer's A: drive and start up. When you get to the first screen choose Minimal Boot and press Enter. At the prompt type:

A:\>EDIT C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DAT , The file will open, then use the keyboard Alt, Arrow & Enter keys to get to EDIT on the top of the file, then Arrow down to FIND, type in - ProductKey - press Enter, and make a note of the number:

It will look like: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Hi,

THANK you for your reply, i have tried this but it says that it cannot find a match so i was unable to find the key number.  Any other SUGGESTIONS.  Do you think i need to get a new Hard drive they have had the computer a while.
Please advise.
