Solve : a problem I'm having, please help if you can? |
|
Answer» I'm so confused by this, because it's like nothing I've ever seen happen before. I don't know how to explain really, but I have a screenshot so maybe that will help. All I know is when I go to Search from the Start menu, this is all that shows up, just the dog, Search Companion, and the exit button. Has the Search feature on your machine ever worked ? Yes, a little more info, please. Any other symptoms? Have you checked for viruses? Quote Is that Microsoft Bob's dog on there? (I ENJOY your sense of humor, GX ! )You inspire me Hopester!dl65: lol, I couldn't think of a better name so this is just what I went with. I use Windows XP. Yes, the search companion has worked before. I don't know what double posting is, how did I do it? Just tell me so I can avoid it in the future. Hopester Doofus: I'm checking for viruses now (with AVG Anti Virus), I never thought of doing that. I'll see what happens though. No one knows what I should do about this? Well, now I'm having the same problem with Yahoo Messenger, whenever someone TRIES to talk to me I can't see what they are saying. I've tried windows update since that's what yahoo SAID to do, the only problem is the windows update website won't load for me!!! All that shows up is a blank white page (very similar to my problem with yahoo messenger). I hate internet explorer. Of course, I can't use Mozilla because you HAVE to use internet explorer for windows update they say, or it won't work... I've also run virus and spyware scans, there were some of both found, but all of them were successfully deleted. And I'm still having the same problem I originally posted about.none....... Quote No one knows what I should do about this? ..... Well given all the useful diagnostic info you have provided ....... I would do the following : 1......Turn off your system restore . 2......Run another full system scan with AVG in "SAFE " mode 3......Run .......Antispyware Beta ...... ( you do have that don't you ?) If not get it at ....... http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en 4.....Then go to MS updates page and get the latest updates ....... BTW ......what else isn't working properly ? dl65 System restore is already off, I haven't run a virus scan in safe mode yet but I'm about to, I use Spybot S&D to help with spyware...do you think AntiSpyware Beta would be a better program to use? I would go to Microsoft updates website but as I said, the page doesn't even load for me. I'm all out of ideas on why it won't, unless you think I should try it in safe mode also? A virus scan takes a long time so...I'll be back later... Oh, and Windows search program and Yahoo Messenger are the only two programs not working right... none........ Antispyware is a very good tool ...one of the better ONES , however you should be using both antispyware and spybot as they each find different things. And yes I would definately be running the scans in the safe mode . Exactly what is the message when you go to the M/S update site ? dl65 Trying to install antispyware but it won't work, this is what happens: Microsoft® Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) Validation RequiredThis download is available to customers running genuine Microsoft Windows. Please click the Continue button to begin Windows validation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- File Name: MicrosoftAntiSpywareInstall.exe Version: Beta Date Published: 7/18/2005 Language: English Download Size: 6700 KB Estimated Download Time: 16 min 56K -------------------------- So I go to a continue button, and then this shows up: -------------------------- Genuine Windows Validation Thank you for choosing to validate your Windows installation. Please complete the short validation process explained in the steps below. After validating, you will be returned to the download details page to access your requested download. Begin genuine Windows validation 1. Run the validation tool. Click Continue to launch the validation tool. When prompted, click Open or Run this program from its current location. Validate Now -------------------------- So...next I go to Validate Now, it downloads this file called legitcheck.hta. So I run this and all that happens is this blank white window shows up titled "Genuine Windows Hypertext Application". I waited and waited for something to load in the window, but still nothing. And that's as far as I ever got trying to install MS Antispyware. Anyway, virus scans in safe mode seem to take a long time, which I don't have time for right now, so I'll do that another time and get back to you on what happens.Trying to install antispyware but it won't work, this is what happens: Microsoft® Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) Validation RequiredThis download is available to customers running genuine Microsoft Windows. No requirement to open IE if your system is set for automatic updates. RayG Quote
