Show with an example the difference between empirical &molecular formula. How are the two related ? |
|
Answer» MOLECULAR formula says how many atoms of each element are in a compound. While empirical formula are the simplest or most reduced ratio of ELEMENTS in a compound. The empirical formula contains the SMALLEST possible WHOLE no. s that describe the atomic ratio. Molecular formula is the actual formula of a compound. For example: Molecular formula for GLUCOSE is C6H12O6. Here the actual no. of atoms of each elements are written. While the empirical formula would be (C6H12O6)/2 which gives C3H6O3 which on further simplification gives CH2O. Molecular formula is based off empirical formula. Its calculated through this method: - ((molecular mass of compound/ empirical mass of compound)) *empirical formula. So, going back to our glucose example, if the empirical formula is CH2O.. and the molecular mass of glucose is 6 times that of methanal, then we can multiply the no. of each atom in methanal to get glucose. I Hope This Helped Uh... ☺❤✌ |
