Answer» On the one hand the village school master comes out as a learned man with all the necessary skills of a teacher. On the other hand, he comes out as a rigid and stem teacher. The poet’s intention could be two-fold. Perhaps he wants to show that every one of us has strengths and weaknesses, and so does the school master. The poet might also want to point out that there are two types of teachers. The ones with the positive traits are admired and loved and the ones with the negative traits are feared and detested. In the case of the school master, the sum-total of his goodness outweighs the sum-total of his negative aspects. So, even if he is not an ideal teacher, he can be considered a good teacher as he had the skills, talents and knowledge required of a teacher. |
