Sexual reproduction of angiospermic plant |
| Answer» Fertilization is the actual reproductive process where the sperm nuclei fuse with the ovary to form the zygote. In a simple way, a successful pollination leads to fertilization. After pollination, each pollen grain on the stigma sends out a tiny threadlike tube. The tube grows down, penetrates the stigma, passes through the style and enters the ovule through an opening called microphyle. In the microphyle it releases two male gametes in the embryo sac. One male gamete fuses with egg cell and the second fuses with the two polar nuclei. The fusion of one male gamete with the egg cell is called syngamy or true fertilization while the fusion of second male gamete with two polar nuclei is called triple fusion. Syngamy along with the triple fusion is called double fertilization. Double fertilization is a characteristic feature of flowering plants or angiosperms | |
