Coffee plant was first introduced in India by a Muslim Fakir called Bababudan Sahib. He brought some seeds of coffee from Mecca during the 17th century. He planted them in the Chandragiri hills presently in the Chikmagalur district. The cultivation of coffee crops started in the 19th century on a large scale. Gradually it spread to Tamil Nadu, Kerala and other parts of our country.
