On what ground can you say that scandium (Z = 21) is a transition element but zinc (Z = 30) is not? [NCERT Example]

Answer»

While considering INCOMPLETELY filled d-orbitals as a criteria for transition elements SCANDIUM ATOM in its ground state has 3d1 d orbital CONFIGURATION. Zinc has completely filled 3d10 electronic configuration in both ground state and in its oxidised states. Hence it’s not regarded as a Transition Element.
