  • The illusion is named after Ludimar Hermann, who wrote about it in 1870. It is ALSO sometimes called the Hermann-Hering illusion as Edwald Hering (1872) also famously wrote about it. However, Sir David Brewster, Scottish scientist and inventor of the KALEIDOSCOPE, was actually the first to WRITE about the phenomenon in 1844, and in his paper he claimed that the Reverend W. Selwyn had first observed it.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Allow your gaze to roam AROUND the figure. Focus at one of the intersection points from time to time.

EFFECT

  • Illusory grey dots or 'smudges' will appear at the intersection points of the white gridlines. The grey dots will disappear if you try to focus on them
