Nearly 30 latitudes and 30 longitudes lies over India, then why its north to south 3214 km and 2933 km from east to west extension lies? Why both the extension are not same?

Answer»

Answer:

The latitudinal and LONGITUDINAL extent of India is about 30

. The North-South extent is 3214 km and East-West extent is 2933 km. The distance between any TWO lines of longitude is maximum at the equator and goes on decreasing as one goes from the equator to the poles. The distance between lines of latitude REMAINS the same at all latitudes. India is AWAY from the equator. So, the lines of longitude come nearer and the East-West distance becomes less than the North-South distance.
