The characteristics of the "Large Intestine" are as follows :-

  • The large intestine is MUCH shorter than the SMALL intestine but, it is comparatively wider than the small intestine.

  • The large intestine of a human being is about 5 feet in LENGTH and is about 2.5 inches in width.

  • The large intestine has three PARTS, namely- "Caecum", "Colon" and "Rectum".

  • The caecum is very large and SPACIOUS in herbivores such as Rabbits, Horses and Donkeys.

  • The large intestine serves to store unabsorbed food remainings for a short period of time.

  • The large intestine does not secrete any enzymes.

  • The large intestine absorbs nutrients and water from the food that comes from the small intestine.
