The thin (GENERALLY INVISIBLE) layer of aluminum OXIDE corrosion on aluminum protects the aluminum from further corrosion. It will even ALLOW aluminum to resist nitric acid because nitric acid is a very strong oxidizer that actually strengthens the corrosion coating. Other acids dissolve aluminum easily because they ALSO dissolve aluminum oxide.
