1.

Meaning of the d orbitals of the transition elements project to the perifery of an atom

Answer»

Answer:

Explanation:

The s and the p-orbitals in an atom are present deep inside an atom, close to the nucleus. On the other hand, the d orbitals are at larger distance from the nucleus and are present at the BOUNDARY or the outer SURFACE of the atom. Hence, the electrons in the s and p orbitals are EMBEDDED inside the atom, because of which they are not much affected by the surrounding environment.

On the other hand, the electrons in the d-orbitals are present closer to the boundary of the atom. As a result, the INTERACTION between these electrons and surrounding atoms or molecules is more. So these electrons affect the surrounding environment, and are ALSO affected by the surrounding environment.
