On squaring both SIDES, we get

=> x^2 + 1/x^2 + 2 = 16

On subtracting 2 from both sides, we get

x^2 + 1/x^2 - 2 = 14 - 2

=> x^2 + 1/x^2 - 2(x)(1/x) = 12
