How would you explain the fact that the first ionization enthalpy of sodium is lower than that of magnesium but its second ionization enthalpy is higher than that of magnesium?

Answer»

Mg has stable electronic configuration 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 due to the presence of completely filled 3s orbital from which it is difficult to remove electron than 3s1 orbitals electron from Na (1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1). Second ionization enthalpy of Na is higher than Mg because it has stable electronic configuration of Na+ (1s2 2s2 2p6) as compared to Mg+ (1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1).
