To understand how to balance chemical EQUATIONS let us take an example.

MnO2 + HCl → MnCl2 + H2O + Cl2

In the example, let us assign each component of MnO2 as ‘a’ , component of HCl as ‘B’ , components of MnCl2 as ‘c’ , components ofH2O as ‘d’ and components of Cl2 as ‘e’

(a)MnO2 + (b)HCl → (c)MnCl2 + (d)H2O + (e)Cl2

Since the component of Mn in ‘a’ and ‘c’ is one THEREFORE a=c

The component of O in ‘a’ is TWO and in ‘d’ is one therefore 2a=d

Component of H in ‘b’ is one and in ‘d’ is two therefore b=2d

Component of Cl in ‘b’ is one , in ‘c’ is two and in ‘e’ is two therefore b=2c+2e

Let us assume ‘a’ as 1

Then c=1, d=2. b=4, e=1

On substituting the values of a, b, c, d, and e in the equation, we will get the balanced chemical equation.

MnO2 + 4HCl → MnCl2 + 2H2O + Cl2.
