Answer» The poet John Masefield recalls the sacrifices made by his mother which has now made him a man. He feels sad that his mother cannot see him now because she was dead. Even if she were to come alive from the grave they would not be able to recognise each other. The poet regrets that he has not repaid the debt to bis Mother for bringing him to life in spite of all the suffering and pain, she had to undergo while giving him birth. The poet feels a sense of guilt he has not been able to repay her and also to women in general. The poet thinks that he is also to blame for the fact that men are considered superior to women for he has not done anything about it. The poet does not want his mother to come alive as he is ashamed to show his face to her.
