How do skin cells respire?

Answer»

Respire means breathing, which is an exchange of gases. Body cells get everything they need by osmosis, using hemoglobin to carry oxygen.

Skin layers are divided into 3 compartments, from the outermost to innermost layer namely epidermis, dermis and hypodermis.

Deep layer of epidermis, dermis and hypodermis are deep beneath the skin so they respire. Whereas superficial layer of epidermis are dead keratinized cells, they are dead so they don't respire anymore.
