Impressionism is a style of art that depicts the visual impression of a moment or mood. Some Paris based artists painted realistic scenes of modern life. They often painted out-doors in their consistent pursuit of an art of spontaniety, sunlight and colour. In doing so, they violated the rules of academic painting. As a result of it, they had to face harsh criticism from the conventional art community. Hence “Impressionism” emerged as an art movement.

प्रभाववाद कला का एक ऐसा तरीका है जिसमें किसी क्षण (या क्षणों) अथवा मनोदशा (मन के भाव/भावों) को दृश्य के रूप में चित्रित किया जाता है। पैरिस के कुछ कलाकारों ने आधुनिक जीवन के वास्तविक दृश्य चित्रित किये। वे वास्तविक कला (स्वाभाविक/प्राकृतिक), सूरज की रौशनी, और रंग (रंगों) की कला के अपने सतत प्रयास में अधिकांशतः खुले में (outdoor) ही चित्रकारी करते थे। ऐसा करते हुऐ उन्होंने शैक्षिक पेंटिंग (चित्रकारी) के नियमों का उल्लंघन किया। इसके परिणामस्वरूप उन्हें पारम्परिक कला सम्प्रदाय के लोगों की कड़ी आलोचना का सामना करना पड़ा। अतः प्रभाववाद एक कला आन्दोलन के रूप में सामने आया।
