Relative density is defined as a ratio of density of

particular substance with that of water.

If the relative density of a substance is less than 1 then

it is less dense than the reference, if it is GREATER than 1 it is DENSER than

the reference. If it is 1 then the densities are equal, that means equal

volumes of the TWO substances have the same mass.

When the reference material is water then a substance which

has a relative density less than 1 will FLOAT and a substance with a relative

density greater than 1 will sink.

The temperature and PRESSURE must be specified for both the

sample and the reference.

In this way, the knowledge of relative density can help in

verifying the purity of a substance.
