Xylem is also called conducting tissues because they are involved in the transportation of food and water THROUGHOUT the plant.

The cells of the epidermis are TIGHTLY packed together forming a mechanical barrier. This mechanical barrier is important to PROTECT against bacterial infection and other harsh environmental conditions. Theepidermis is covered by both cutin and CUTICLE( which provides waxyprotective layer).
