1.

Give reason : (a) Silicon form compounds with coordination number of 5 and 6. (b) Si—F bond is stronger than C—F bond although Si is larger in size than C.

Answer»

nce Silicon uses the empty 3d ATOMIC orbitals and shows the coordination number greater than four. Silicon can EXPAND its octet beyond the eight electrons. Thus, silicon can FORM compounds with coordination number five and six. (b) In Si-F bond, there is dative pi binding which involves filled p-atomic orbitals of fluorine and also d-atomic orbitals of silicon. Although Silicon is LARGER in size than Carbon, due to the presence of pi binding of fluorine and empty orbitals of silicon, "Si-F bond" is "stronger" than "C-F bond"."
