Answer» e is just to remove the H+, which would otherwise convert your NH3 to NH4+ which does not have a lone PAIR and would not react. Without the base, you would need twice as MUCH ammonia. A strong base could also convert part of the NH3 to NH2-, which would be a much stronger NUCLEOPHILE. |
