For the equation ax2 + bx + c = 0, a ≠ 0, write the expression for discriminant D.Comment upon nature of roots if(i) D > 0 (ii) D = 0 (iii) D < 0.

Answer»

For the equation ax2+ bx + c = 0, a ≠ 0,

The discriminant D is given by D =b2 – 4ac.

And we know that roots of given equation is given by x = \(\frac{-b\pm\sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}=\frac{-b\pm\sqrt{D}}{2a}.\)

(i) If D > 0 then roots are real and distinct.

(ii) If D = 0 then roots are real and equal.

(iii) If D < 0 then rots are distinct but not real (imaginary).
