Find the free-fall acceleration of an object on the surface of the moon, if the radius of the moon and its mass are 1740 km and 7.4 x10²² kg respectively. Compare this value with free fall acceleration of a body on the surface of the earth.(Ans: approximately 1.63 m/s²)

Answer»

Acceleration DUE to the GRAVITY on Earth = 9.8 m/s².

We KNOW that the acceleration due to the gravity on the MOON is 1/6th that of the Earth.

∴ Acceleration due to the gravity on moon = 1/6 × 9.8 m/s².

= 1.63 m/s².

Hence, the acceleration due to the gravity on the moon is 1.63 m/s².

Hope it helps.
