and FATHER's age be y

after eight years

y+8=2.5(x+8)

y=3x

on SOLVING the 2 equations

3x+8=2.5x+20

0.5x=12

x=24

therefore y=3x=72

after 16 years

y=80 and x=32

y:x=80:32=5:2
