Hartals put life at a standstill. There were large-scale boycotts of schools, colleges and offices.\xa0Large scale participation of\xa0women\xa0was an important feature of the\xa0Civil Disobedience Movement. During the Salt March, thousands of\xa0women\xa0came out of their homes to listen to the speeches of Gandhi.\xa0women\xa0participated in protest marches, manufactured salt, and picketed foreign cloth and liquor shops. Many went to jail.
