  • Endemic : When a particular disease occurs in and is confined to a certain area, affecting only a fewer NUMBER of people in a population is called endemic disease. For example, malaria is endemic in large parts of Africa, and chickenpox is endemic in the UK.

  • Epidemic : A rapid OUTBREAK of an infectious disease that spreads from place to place affecting large number of people at the same time in a population within a short duration is termed as epidemic. For example, the 1994 plague epidemic in INDIA was transmitted from Surat to many other places.

  • PANDEMIC : When a disease spreads over a whole COUNTRY or worldwide, it is called a Pandemic Disease. AIDS is an example of a Pandemic Disease.

  • Sporadic : When there are scattered individual cases of a disease, the condition is called sporadic. Chikungunya and Diphtheria in India examples of sporadic diseases.
