| Answer» A\xa0modal\xa0is a type of auxiliary (helping) verb that is used to express: ability, possibility, permission or obligation.\xa0Modal\xa0phrases (or semi-modals) are used to express the same things as\xa0modals, but are a combination of auxiliary verbs and the preposition to.\xa0There are ten types of modal verbs:\xa0can, could,\xa0may, might, will, would, shall, should, must, ought to.\xa0Can\xa0(or cannot/can\'t) shows ability, in the sense of knowing how or being able to do something. In informal situations, it expresses permission, in the sense of being allowed to do something.\xa0There are ten common\xa0modal\xa0auxiliary verbs and they are \'can\', \'could\', \'will\', \'would\', \'shall\', \'should\', \'may\', \'might\', \'must\' and \'ought\'. | |
