Explain cleansing action of soap with help of micelle. |

Answer» Cleansing action of soaps:The dirt present on clothes is organic in nature and insoluble in water. Therefore, it cannot be removed by only washing with water. When soap is dissolved in water, its hydrophobic ends attach themselves to the dirt and remove it from the cloth. Then, the molecules of soap arrange themselves in micelle formation and trap the dirt at the centre of the cluster. These micelles remain suspended in the water. Hence, the dust particles are easily rinsed away by water. When soap is dissolved in water it forms a colloidal suspension. In this colloidal suspension, the soap molecules cluster together to form micelles and remain radially suspended in water with hydrocarbon end towards centre and ionic end directed outward. The dirt particles always adhere to oil and grease present on the clothes. When dirty cloth is dipped in solution, its non polar end of micelles attach to Grease or oil present in dirt and polar end remains in water layer. A stable emulsion of oil in water is formed. The emulsified oil or grease globules bearing the dirt can now be washed with water. |
