LET father PRESENT age be x YEARS and son present age y years.

Eight years ago

Father age = x - 8

Since age = y - 8

so,x - 8 = 3(y - 8)

x - 8 = 3y - 24

x = 3y - 16 ........(1)

After 2 years,

Father age = x + 2

Son age = y + 2

so, x + 2 = 2(y + 2)

3y - 16 + 2 = 2y + 4

y = 18

so, x= 3(18) - 16 = 54 - 16 = 38
