Mania is extremely strong desire or enthusiasm for something. It is a craze. Gretl has mania for cleanliness. Everyday she cleans everything in her kitchen, scours the oven daily, polishes windows of her apartment on the sixteenth floor, that too without using a safety belt. She insists on doing all the household work herself. She keeps everything neat and clean. On the other hand Gretl says that Dr Margolin’s sense of honour amounted to a mania. People frequently comment on him but still he remains non-responsive to them and maintains self restraint. He believes in humanity and honours mankind.

उन्माद किसी चीज के प्रति एक बेहद तीव्र इच्छा या अति उत्साह (सनक या पागलपन) होता है। यह एक झक या सनक होती है। ग्रेट्ल को सफाई के प्रति सनक है। वह प्रत्येक दिन अपने रसोईघर की प्रत्येक वस्तु को साफ करती है, ओवन को रगड़-रगड़ कर साफ करती है, सोलहवीं मंजिल पर अपने अपार्टमेन्ट की खिड़कियों पर पॉलिश करती है वह भी बिना सुरक्षा बैल्ट या कमरबंध बांधे। वह घर का सारा कार्य स्वयं करने पर जोर देती है। वह प्रत्येक वस्तु को साफ-सुथरा रखती है।। दूसरी ओर ग्रेट्ल कहती है कि डॉ मारगोलिन के सम्मान का भाव पागलपन की हद तक पहुँच चुका है। लोग बार-बार उस पर टिप्पणी करते हैं लेकिन वह उनके प्रति निरुत्तर रहता है, और अपना आत्म संयम बनाये रखता है। वह मानवता में विश्वास करता है और मनुष्यों का सम्मान करता है।
