The poet preaches the virtues of patience, tolerance, truthfulness and love in the poem ‘If’. Though he invokes the youth to inculcate them in their character yet the poem has a universal appeal and applies to all human beings. The poet says that together with these qualities, virtues like equanimity in pain and pleasure, perseverence, humility and hard work may help all to achieve perfection in life and make them men in true sense. But all these are ideals and, if not impossible, are difficult to achieve for ordinary persons. Only the very strong-willed persons gifted with extra-ordinary powers may achieve them.

कवि कविता ‘If’ में धैर्य, सहनशीलता, सत्यवादिता और प्रेम जैसे गुणों का उपदेश देता है। यद्यपि वह इन गुणों को अपने चरित्र में लाने के लिये नौजवानों का आह्वान करता है फिर भी यह कविता सबके लिये संदेश है और सब पर लागू होती है। कवि कहता है कि इन गुणों के साथ, अन्य गुण जैसे सुख और दुख में मानसिक सन्तुलन, लगन, विनम्रता और परिश्रम भी सबके जीवन में पूर्णता लाने में सहायता कर सकते हैं और उन्हें सही अर्थ में मनुष्य बना सकते हैं। परन्तु ये सभी आदर्श हैं और यदि असम्भव नहीं तो साधारण व्यक्तियों के लिये कठिन जरूर हैं। केवल बहुत शक्तिशाली इच्छा वाले लोग जिनमें असाधारण शक्तियाँ होती हैं इन्हें प्राप्त कर सकते हैं
