In ethene, C2H4, THREE of the four electrons in the outer shell (2s2, 2p2) of each of the carbon atoms (1s2, 2s2,2p2) are sp2 hybridized, which RESULTS in one remaining outer 2p-orbital electron. The three sp2-hybridized electrons of each C-atom form three planar sigma-covalent bonds. Per ethene molecule, four of these sp2-hybridized orbitals (six in total as we have two C-atoms) form covalent sigma-bonds with the 1s electron of each hydrogen atom (4 H-atoms for two C-atoms) while the two remaining sp2 orbitals form a sigma bond connecting the two C-atoms.
