Differentiate between thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers. Give one example of each.

Answer»

Differences between thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers.

ThermoplasticsThermosetting plastics
(i) These polymer are linear or slightly branched chain molecules
(ii) Soften on heating and harden on cooling and can be remoulded.
(iii) Some common examples are polyethene, PVC, polystyrene, etc.
(i) These polymers are cross linked or heavily branched molecules
(ii) On heating undergo extensive cross linking in moulds and become infusible.
(iii) Some common examples are bakelite, urea-formaldehyde resins, terylene, etc
