Describe the Rymer Timan Reaction .

Answer»

Reaction of phenol with chloroform and KOH to give salicylaldehyde is known as Reimer-Tiemann reaction.

Mechanism:—-

In this reaction, chloroform reacts FIRST with KOH to form anion which subsequently LOSES CHLORIDE ION to form electron DEFICIENT dichlorocarbene.

Carbene in next step attacks on phenol at ortho position to form an intermediate, which on hydrolysis form salicylaldehyde.
