(1) Solvent : The component in which solution formation takes place and which constitutes larger proportion of a solution is called solvent. 

For example, in an aqueous solution of sugar, water is the solvent.

(2) Solute : In a solution the component which dissolves and constitutes smaller proportion of a solution is called a solute. 

For example, in a sugar solution, sugar is the solute.
