if a line is drawn parallel to one side of a triangle intersecting the other TWO sides, then it divides the two sides in the same ratio.

=> AD/ DB =  AE/CE

=> AD/ 9  =   8 / (AC - AE)

=> AD/9  = 8/(20 - 8)

=> AD/9  = 8/12

=> AD/9   = 2/3

=> AD = 9 * 2/3

=> AD = 6
