The poem ‘If’ is an address to a son by a father who instructs him to cultivate great virtues so as to be a man in the true sense. Hence, the mood of the poem is inspiring and the tone is didactic. The poem has a universal appeal to all the youths. It inspires them to acquire qualities like self-confidence, self-reliance and self-control. It exhorts them to treat the ups and downs of life with poise. These qualities shall bring them success and perfection in life. Though the poet takes an idealistic view, he teaches the youths the real values of life.
