The dielectric material set up a secondary electric field `E_p` of its own in a direction opposite to the APPLIED field `E_0`. This PHENOMENON is known as dielectric polarization. The net field strength gets reduced and is given as `E=E_0-E_P`
Definition: The alignment of dipole moment of PERMANENT or induced dipoles of a dielectric in an external electric field is called dielectric polarization.
